Hospice honors local man¨s generosityCadillac — He may not look like an entrepreneur philanthropist, but Rick Miller of Lake City, in his own small way, fits the profile. Since his job as a highway line-painter is seasonal, he decided to “start a side business.” He chose to sell Christmas trees because he likes to be outdoors. In high school he used to get permission to leave school to harvest and trim the trees. “Back in those days,” Miller recalled, “we loaded box cars and they railed the trees out of Cadillac. I’ve always been with the trees. And at the tree lot I like being with the people that time of year.” For the last two years Miller’s lot, called Jesus Birthday Trees, has been located at the corner of North Mitchell and Powers Street. His sign advertises that a portion of all sales will go to charity. And he’s been good on his word for the five years he’s been in business. Although hesitant to talk about his good deeds, a recent press release from Hospice of Michigan singled him out, thanking him for his support. Other charities he supports include Operation Smile, Salvation Army, and St. Jude’s Hospital. “There’s a lot of need,” he said. “It’s not much, but I like to spread it around. My desire to give, I guess it comes from my faith because I’m blessed to have what I have.” He also takes pleasure in sharing kind words during the Christmas season. “There’s a lot of people that have a hard time during that time of year. People come to my lot and you can see the pain in their eyes. They are going to try and celebrate Christmas the best they can and the tree helps. I put my arm around them and tell them to remember the good times.” mardijo@chartermi.net | 775-NEWS (6397) Related articles: ,12 days of Christmas become months at WEM ,Reed gets early Christmas present ,French Jan CPI down 0.3 pct from Dec, up 1.2 pct yr/yr ,Ho, Ho, Ho !
