Christmas cheer continues at councilBy Jean Tilley
STAFF at Somerset County Council have continued the festive cheer into 2007, by collecting over 8,500 Christmas cards for recycling in aid of The Woodland Trust, beating last year's total of 8,000. Last year the national scheme recycled over 82 million cards, and The Woodland Trust hopes to top 90 million this year. The scheme has helped the Trust to save woods and trees, as well as cutting down the amount of waste that traditionally gets binned over Christmas. Cllr Hazel Prior-Sankey, portfolio holder for transport and waste at Somerset County Council said: "It is amazing to think that over Christmas we have sent over one billion Christmas cards in the UK. "In County Hall we have tried to do our bit by providing collection points for staff to make it easy for them to recycle their Christmas cards, and it is fantastic that we have beaten last year's figure and collected so many cards for recycling". For those people who have still got Christmas cards, it is not too late to get them recycled, as there are cardboard recycling facilities at all eighteen Household Waste Recycling Centres in Somerset.
