Driver In Fatal Christmas Eve Collision Legally Drunk

AUBURN, Maine -- The Androscoggin County sheriff said the 20-year-old driver of a vehicle involved in a Christmas Eve collision in Poland that killed six people had a blood alcohol level nearly double the legal limit.

Sheriff Guy Desjardins told News 8 on Thursday that tests showed that Michael Cournoyer's blood alcohol level was .14 at the time of the early-morning collision along Route 122.

Under Maine law, no one under the age of 21 is allowed to have any amount of alcohol in his or her system.

State records revealed that Cournoyer, of Auburn, was operating with a suspended license.

The collision killed Cournoyer and his three passengers: Robert Bruce, 19, of Auburn; Matt Manley, 16, of Lewiston; and Jacob Roy, 20, of Lewiston.

Desjardins said the driver of the other vehicle, Steven Welton, 27, of Poland, had no alcohol in his blood. Walton and his fiancée, Laura Caron, 26, of Poland, also died in the collision.

Desjardins said the lead investigator in the case hopes to present his report to the district attorney by March 16 so that prosecutors can present evidence to the April, session of the grand jury.
